After the ratification of the Istanbul Convention by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, it appeared on the President's website petition about its cancellation, which has already collected almost 18 signatures. This petition initiated Yulia Tymoshenko, head of the Batkivshchyna party.
In the Odesa region, as in the whole country, signatures are collected by the local branches of the party. Oleg Radkovskyi, the head of "Batkivshchyna" of the Odesa region, said that today this issue has a lot of support among the population and representatives of the country's clergy.
"We held meetings and discussion of the adoption of the Istanbul Convention with the Spiritual Council of Christians of the Odesa region, the Bishop of Odesa and the Baltic Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the head of the Evangelical Christian-Baptist Church "Prosvita". Representatives of all religious organizations supported the initiative of our party and signed a joint Appeal to the President regarding the denunciation of the Law on Ratification of the Convention, and today we already have more than 17 signatures on the petition," Oleg Radkovskii said.
In turn, the head of the "Batkivshchyna" branch in Odesa, Mykhailo Pozhivanov, added that today is definitely not the time to discuss this issue.
"The adoption of the Istanbul Convention was not a mandatory norm for submitting an application for Ukraine's accession to the EU, since more than ten countries of the European Union have not ratified the Istanbul Convention or are currently working on its cancellation. I am sure that the necessary 25 votes will be collected, the President will consider the petition and make the right decision, because at the moment our society is not yet ready to consider such cardinal things," Mykhailo Pozhivanov summarized.
