Great Britain wants to develop and put into service a hypersonic missile. They want to complete the project by 2030. About this the The Telegraph.
As the newspaper writes, the military leadership of Britain wants to have a hypersonic weapon capable of developing a speed of more than Mach 5 in order to catch up with the USA, China and Russia in this matter.
The British Ministry of Defense wants the missile to be developed and manufactured entirely in Britain, with a deadline of 2030.
The project was identified by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as part of a planned £75 billion increase in the defense budget over the next six years.
The missile plans are believed to be still in the early stages, and no decision has yet been made on whether the missiles will be launched from land, sea or air. One option is to mount the missiles on a Typhoon or F-35 fighter, but then the range would be less than a ground-launched weapon. The missiles can also be launched from UK warships.
Since the end of last year, the Ministry of Defense has created a group of about 80 companies to develop possible projects. The agreement was agreed in December, it was called a "national mission".
Sources involved in the project said building the rockets would be particularly challenging because some of the materials required do not yet exist, meaning they must be designed from scratch to withstand the high temperatures associated with hypersonic speeds.
Engineers are also working on a British version of the scramjet engine, which uses compressed air traveling at supersonic speeds to help burn liquid or solid fuel.
The Ministry of Defense declined to comment in detail on the plans, citing national security concerns, but a spokesman said: “We are working on hypersonic technologies to further develop the UK's enhanced sovereign capabilities. We continue to invest in our equipment to meet current and future threats."
