The new language model will work directly in users' devices, without having to communicate with servers. Such language models are inferior in capacity to those that work on huge server farms with billions of parameters.
However, Apple engineers can take advantage of the full vertical integration of their platforms with software configured for Apple's chips inside the devices. While on-premises LLMs may not have as rich a knowledge base as ChatGPT to answer various questions, they can be customized to meet specific user requests.
Another plus of such systems is confidentiality. On-device models can also perform generative AI tasks, such as creating documents or images based on clues.
