Employees of the State Bureau of Investigation (GBR) blocked the theft of property of the state institution "Southern Correctional Colony No. 51" in Odessa worth more than UAH 223 million. This was reported by the press service of the GBR.
It is noted that the state institution is in the state of liquidation, part of its property must be privatized.
The pre-trial investigation established that the leaders of the liquidation commission together with the representatives of the "Southern Correctional Colony" organized a scheme to remove scrap metal from the territory of the state institution. Employees of "Odessa Correctional Colony No. 14" are also involved in the scheme. Criminals illegally dismantled metal structures and equipment for sale.
The court imposed an arrest on the complex of premises and facilities of the "Southern Correctional Colony" in October 2021 at the request of the GBR investigators. The pre-trial investigation continues, all those involved in the illegal activity are being established.
We remind you that the colony has not been working since June 2019 due to the inmates' riot and the destruction of most of the premises by fire on May 27, 2019. Since then, the territory has been falling into disrepair, buildings and structures are in a dilapidated condition. At the same time, the state annually spends more than UAH 18 million on the maintenance of the colony.
The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine has put the former prison up for sale - high-rise residential complexes can be built on this territory. The colony has been asked to be sold at auction three times already, the starting price was UAH 223,250 million, but no buyers have yet been found for the object.
