The Ukrainian police finally put their "secret weapon" into action. Six months ago in December, four Skoda Kodiaq crossover cars were purchased, intended for inconspicuous surveillance of offenders. Prior to that, they were actively tested, and from July 1 they went on the roads.
As told Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Anton Gerashchenko: "Radars are installed on the cars, allowing to record the speed of the oncoming car and the car that is overtaking. By 2024, it is proposed to introduce 550 cameras that record violations of the speed limit in traffic."
Police "phantoms" are needed for invisible control over drivers. As he explains Alexey Beloshitsky, Deputy Head of the Patrol Police Department, similar vehicles are a preventive measure. People behind the wheel should know that the police may be near them, and this will reduce the number of traffic violations in the long run.
Four Kodiaks really look as unremarkable as possible. There are no identification marks on them, and until the flasher turns on and people in uniform leave the cabin, you will never guess that these are patrol cars. And after testing, the Ministry of Internal Affairs plans to purchase another 125 such vehicles of other brands - so that no one would guess.
"Phantom" cars are equipped with technologies that allow you to quickly and accurately notice reckless drivers.
“In the patrol car, a device is installed that allows you to record offenses that occur around the police car, even if it is in motion. That is, it is possible to record a violation of the speed of vehicles moving in the same direction or in the opposite direction. This allows the police officer to be mobile and provides an additional moment of prevention of violations,” Beloshitsky said.
