From January 16, according to the norms of the new language law, first of all, government employees and persons acquiring citizenship will have to take an exam in Ukrainian. However, there are exceptions.

According to the language ombudsman, first of all, the exam on knowledge of the state language will concern those who apply for state service. We are talking about ministers, heads of regional state and district administrations, heads of state-owned enterprises.
"That is, those who will directly engage in activities related to state power. Regarding the second category, these are citizens who receive citizenship. These citizens of other countries who have passed the state examination have the right to obtain the citizenship of our country.
Of course, there will be categories that will not be passed (language exam), at least in 2021. Perhaps there will be some changes in the law. This concerns, first of all, the deputies, this is the norm of the law, there is nothing you can do about law enforcement structures as well."
On July 16, 2019, the law "On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as a state" entered into force in Ukraine.
The Verkhovna Rada adopted the document on April 25, 2019, even before the inauguration of Volodymyr Zelensky.
- Article 16 will enter into force on January 2021, 30. of the language law, which obliges all service providers in Ukraine to communicate with clients in the state language.
- At the same time, the secretariat of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language can apply fines in the case of systematic violations of the language legislation from January 16.
