Apple will allow third-party apps to be installed in iOS 17

Apple tried to challenge the bill

Insider Mark Gurman said that with the release of iOS 17, Apple will finally allow iPhone users to download applications from third-party sources, not just from the official App Store. This will happen for the first time in the history of the company.

The innovation is a forced measure that Apple will have to take in order to comply with the requirements of the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which came into effect on November 1, 2022. It requires Apple and Google to give users access to third-party app stores. In this way, developers will be able to bypass the large commissions of the App Store and Play Store.

Apple tried to challenge the bill, saying that installing apps from third-party sources would "undermine the privacy and security protections that iPhone users rely on." The fact is that such control allows Apple to independently check each application published in the App Store and reject those that do not meet the requirements or contain malicious software. This gives results: the number of viruses on Android is many times greater than the number on iOS.

However, Apple was never able to convince the EU of its point of view.
