Samsung leads the smartphone market at the end of 2021

But Apple is catching up.

Analysts Counterpoint summarized the results of the smartphone market for the whole of 2021. According to their report, world shipments of smartphones last year reached 1,39 billion units. This is 4% more devices than a year earlier.

"The global smartphone market grew for the first time since 2017. But despite a 4% increase, annual deliveries remained below the pre-pandemic level due to the continued impact of COVID-19, as well as a shortage of components," say analysts.

According to their research, Samsung continues to be the leader, having increased shipments by 6%. The company sold more than 270 million smartphones worldwide, when in 2020 there were 255,7 million sales.

In second place is Apple, which confidently continues to narrow the gap: 237,9 million smartphones last year are 18% more than in 2020.

The gap narrowed due to the fourth quarter. During the last three months of 2021, Apple delivered 81,5 million smartphones to the market, and Samsung – 67,2 million.

The top three is closed by the Chinese company Xiaomi. The Beijing manufacturer has more than 190 million smartphones - this is 31% more than in 2020. It slightly separated from OPPO (143,2 million, +28%) and Vivo (131,3 million, +21%), which occupy the fourth and fifth places, respectively.

All other companies put a total of 2021 million smartphones on the market in 413,3, 18% less than in 2020.

Note that Motorola has become the fastest growing brand on the market. This is due to LG's exit from the US market, low price and growing popularity in Latin America.
