The corresponding law was adopted by the Australian Parliament today, February 25. According to the document, in Australia, Google and Facebook are obliged to pay the country's media companies for the content used on their platforms.
"The code represents a significant microeconomic reform that has drawn the attention of the world to the Australian parliament... Australia will be the first country where the government will decide on the price that the technology giants will pay if their commercial negotiations with the country's publications fail," the statement of the chief Treasurer Josh Frydenberg.
In turn, Google believes that the law ignores the real value that their search engine provides to news publishers and opens up huge and unreasonable requirements.
"This will create an unprecedented and distorting result in which Google will have to pay for links to news websites in search results. Obligation to pay for links will violate the principles of search engines and the Internet for everyone," the Google management commented on the situation.
Facebook also criticized the adopted law. Representatives of the social network threatened to completely remove the news from its Australian platform.
"This eliminates the opportunity for genuine bargaining, forcing Facebook to make payments unrelated to true commercial value calculations and encouraging news publishers to make unreasonable claims. This distorts our existing advertising relationship with publishers," Facebook said.
