Employees of the Security Service of Ukraine in the course of investigative and operational actions in Odessa liquidated an underground cryptocurrency mining center that stole industrial amounts of electricity from a state critical infrastructure facility. This was reported in the SBU press center.
Illegal activity could lead to emergency situations in the transport sector, including during railway transportation.
In addition, the neutralization of illegal business made it possible to prevent millions of budget losses, the exact size of which will be determined by the examination.
According to the investigation, two residents of the regional center are involved in the creation of an illegal mining center. Technological equipment for mining electronic money was installed in a rented warehouse in the city.
Part of the profit was converted by the traders into foreign currency and taken abroad through third parties. The rest of the digital money was stored in their own virtual wallets.
It was established that the power supply of the specialized equipment was made by the attackers through an unauthorized connection to the state power grid.
During searches of the warehouse and residences of the dealers, law enforcement officers found more than 100 pieces of computer equipment and equipment for cryptocurrency mining, as well as means of communication and documentation with evidence of illegal activity. Seized items and materials were sent for examination.
Currently, a pre-trial investigation is underway to establish all the circumstances of the illegal activity and bring the guilty parties to justice.
