From November 1, new traffic rules will come into force in Ukraine

New road signs and markings will appear

From November 1, changes to traffic rules will come into force in Ukraine. Oleg Beloshitskyi, first deputy head of the Patrol Police Department, reported this on his Facebook page.

In particular, among the newly introduced are new road signs: a residential area, a pedestrian path, the beginning of a settlement and its end, the direction of a turn, the places of permitted stopping and parking, the prohibition of the movement of vehicles, gas/electric charging stations, a place for charging electric cars, a toll road and its end, a safety island, a diagonal pedestrian crossing and others.

Also, new road markings are introduced to indicate traffic calming agents; allocated parking spaces along the roads and the approach to the roundabout; before leaving school grounds; to designate the place of concentration of traffic accidents; for marking allocated parking spaces along roads, etc.

A new one is added to the current vertical marking: yellow-red. The requirements for border road markings have also been changed in the Traffic Regulations.

We note that the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses was not affected by the changes, therefore the responsibility for violating the requirements of road signs and road markings remains the same.

In addition, the changes are related to the movement of cyclists, pedestrians and people with visual impairments, namely:

  • new definition of a bicycle lane;
  • the concept of a bicycle lane and a bicycle crossing;
  • the specified rights and obligations of cyclists and how they should act while driving is regulated in detail;
  • the adjacent movement of pedestrians and cyclists, as well as the movement of persons with impaired vision, is regulated.

As for cyclists, the administrative liability for them also remains unchanged, namely under Article 127 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses (Violation of traffic rules by pedestrians, cyclists and persons driving heavy vehicles and animal drivers).
