Ukrainians in Ireland will begin to be evicted from April: what is the reason for such a decision

Thousands of refugees in Ireland are at risk of deportation

As of April 1, the country's government is lifting the ban on evictions that was in place during the winter. Thousands of refugees in Ireland are at risk of deportation.

About this reports the Visit Ukraine Today.

Why are refugees facing evictions in Ireland?

According to the politician, the country currently lacks 250 places to live. Ireland faced an unprecedented housing problem along with the need to provide housing for Ukrainian migrants and refugees from other countries.

"Now we have accepted 58 Ukrainians, and another 20 have received international protection. There is a big problem with housing," explained Immigration Minister Roderich O'Gorman.

Local far-right groups are using the housing crisis as a pretext for protests, with some carrying banners reading: "Ireland is overcrowded".

It is expected that during 2023 the housing crisis in the country will reach a special scale. According to experts, mass evictions will become an additional burden for emergency services.

A record 11 people, a third of whom are children, urgently needed housing in January, according to the latest government figures.

What forecasts does the government of Ireland give for the placement of Ukrainian refugees?

Sinn Féin, the country's most popular party and opposition group, says 10 people could be forcibly evicted this year. Its representatives are calling on the government to "show some compassion" and extend the ban on evictions.

Officials admit that more than 2000 people who received eviction notices last year may be asked to leave.

As you know, a ban on evictions was introduced in Ireland in October 2022 due to the rising cost of living. Officials have seen it as a temporary measure, but say lifting the eviction ban will protect the rights of homeowners who, for example, are facing rent arrears or planning to sell their properties.

Some hotel owners want to freely dispose of the rooms that the government, according to the contract, provided to refugees from Ukraine.
