Educational literature: in Odessa, a thief was sentenced to read poems and "Tom Sawyer"

The court took into account their low level of intellectual development

The judge of the Malinovsky district court of Odesa ordered local residents accused of theft to read works of the classics. This became known from the register of court decisions.

We are talking about the books "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain, "The White Fang" by Jack London and the poem by Taras Shevchenko "Days passthe nights pass... ".

Two residents of the Belgorod-Dnestrovsky district were detained for car theft. They broke into the toll booth at night and stole two cars. They stole two radios, speakers and a gear lever from the cabins. The court estimated the damage at 1 hryvnias.

Judge Garsky, making his decision, recalled the words of the Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky that "to stop reading books means to stop thinking", and "reading the works determined by the court for the accused will be a stimulus to thinking and understanding the world in a measure without committing socially harmful actions."

Note that the defendants could have been sentenced to prison, but the court took into account their low level of intellectual development. Therefore, they were sentenced not to a real term, but only to reading educational books and a trial period of one hour.
