For the first time in an EU country, a transgender person became a deputy prime minister

In Belgium, a transgender woman was appointed deputy prime minister

In Belgium, a transgender woman was appointed deputy prime minister — this is the first case in the EU countries. This is reported The Brussels Times.

Last week, a new government was approved in Belgium. Petra De Sutter, an openly transgender woman, became the Deputy Prime Minister.

— De Sutter, a former member of the European Parliament, was appointed to the government by the Flemish Green Party. She also received the portfolio of the Minister of State Enterprises and State Administration, says the message.

De Sutter is a gynecologist by profession and headed the Department of Reproductive Medicine at Ghent University. Throughout her political career, she did not hide her gender identity and was an active participant in the LGBT movement.

— I am proud of the fact that in Belgium and in most countries of the European Union, your gender identity does not define you as a person and is not a problem. I hope that my appointment as a minister and deputy prime minister can cause debate in countries where this is not yet the case, De Sutter wrote on Twitter.
