Restrictions will be in effect at least until January 10. The purpose of the measures is to contain the spread of the coronavirus infection.
As German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, the government's goal has always been to avoid overloading the health care system. At the same time, Merkel admitted that the measures introduced will significantly affect the Christmas and New Year celebrations. She noted that it is still difficult to predict whether the restrictions will be extended after January 10.
During the lockdown period, most stores will be closed, with the exception of food stores and those selling everyday goods. Pharmacies, banks and gas stations will also remain open. Hairdressers, beauty salons and other similar enterprises in the service sector will not work during the lockdown.
Children of preschool and school age should stay at home as early as December 16.
Meetings during the lockdown will be allowed with the participation of no more than five people. This restriction will be somewhat relaxed during the celebration of Christmas - from December 24 to 26, but only for a circle of close relatives. Divine services in churches are allowed, but without singing and with observance of hygienic measures, as well as on the condition of prior registration.
In addition, the use of alcoholic beverages in public places will be prohibited. Penalties are provided for violation of this prohibition. The sale of pyrotechnics will also be banned. Thus, the Germans will celebrate the New Year without traditional fireworks.
