Today, December 14, the Electoral College in the USA will vote for the president and vice president based on the results of the November 3 election.
The electoral college consists of 538 members. It is expected that at the end of the voting, the margin in favor of Joe Biden will be 306 votes against 232 for the current President Donald Trump.
Voters will vote each in their state starting at 10:00 a.m. EST.
Presidential elections in the USA are held according to a two-stage system: after the national vote, there is a vote by a college of electors from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, who cast their votes in accordance with how their state voted. The number of electors from each state is equal to the number of its representatives in Congress. In order to win the election, one of the candidates must receive at least 270 votes.
According to the US Constitution, the electoral college voting results must be approved by Congress. It is expected that on January 6, 2021, a joint meeting of the Senate and the House of Representatives will be held, at which the counting of voters' votes will be held.
The final stage of the elections should be the inauguration of the president, who will be sworn in and take office on January 20.
