The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan reported on the columns of military equipment that successfully entered the Lachin district in Nagorno-Karabakh. Earlier, Azerbaijan had already occupied the Aghdam and Kelbajar districts.
"According to the tripartite statement signed by the presidents of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Russian Federation and the prime minister of the Republic of Armenia, units of the Azerbaijan Army entered the Lachin district on December 1," the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
As a reminder, the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh worsened on September 27, 2020, when active fighting began on the disputed territory. Azerbaijan and Armenia accused each other of provocations, after which the Azerbaijani armed forces began an offensive, captured the southern part of the problem region and came close to the capital of the unrecognized "NKR" - Stepanakert (Khankendi).
Baku and Yerevan have disputed the region's ownership since February 1988, when it announced its withdrawal from the Azerbaijan SSR. During the armed conflict of 1992-1994, Azerbaijan lost control over Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent districts.
On the night of November 10, the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, as well as the Presidents of Azerbaijan and Russia, Ilham Aliyev and Vladimir Putin, accepted a statement on the complete cessation of fire and all military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh from November 10.
