The British Serious Fraud Office has gained control over three objects of elite real estate belonging to Gulnara Karimova, the daughter of the former president of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov.
According to the BBC, these are two apartments in the London district of Belgravia and a mansion in Surrey. According to the SFO, these facilities were purchased with the proceeds of corrupt deals in Uzbekistan, as between 2004 and 2012, Karimova received hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes from telecommunications companies for access to the Uzbekistan market.
After investigators were able to establish a link between the Karimov family's assets in the UK and the proceeds of corruption in Uzbekistan, the SFO opened a proceeds of crime case.
Gulnara, 51, is the daughter of former President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov, who died in 2016. She is currently serving a 13-year prison sentence in Uzbekistan for fraud and money laundering.
For a while, Gulnara Karimova was considered the heir to her father Islam Karimov, who was the president of Uzbekistan from 1989 until his death in 2016. But in 2014, she disappeared from the public field. As it turned out, she was arrested on corruption charges while her father was still in power.
