Every year on August 24, Independence Day is celebrated in Ukraine - it was on this day that the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR proclaimed the Act of Independence of Ukraine. On this day, mass events and festivities are usually held throughout the country.
In March 1991, at the initiative of the People's Movement of Ukraine, a referendum on perestroika was held, and a republican consultative poll was held: "Do you agree that Ukraine should be part of the Union of Sovereign Republics on the basis of the Declaration on State Sovereignty of Ukraine?" More than 80% of respondents responded positively to it.
On July 16, 1990, the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the Declaration on the State Sovereignty of Ukraine and the resolution "On the Day of Proclamation of Independence of Ukraine.
On August 24, 1991, the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the Act of Proclamation of Independence of Ukraine.
"On August 24, 1991, Ukraine will be declared an independent democratic state. From the moment of the declaration of independence, only its Constitution (888-09), laws, government decrees, and other acts of the republic's legislation are recognized as valid on the territory of Ukraine," the text of the document said. On December 1, 1991, the declaration of independence was confirmed by the All-Ukrainian referendum.
Today, the main holidays are held in Kyiv, where the President of Ukraine usually gives a ceremonial reception for Independence Day. Also, the first persons of the state lay flowers at the monuments of outstanding Ukrainians and participate in the prayer for Ukraine, which traditionally takes place in Sofia of Kyiv. In parallel with this holiday, it is actively celebrated in other cities of the country.
