Ukraine wants to include the Chernobyl zone in the UNESCO list as a reserve of the Soviet era

The question was initiated by the Ministry of Culture.

Alexander Tkachenko, the Minister of Culture and Information Policy, wants to apply for the inclusion of the Chernobyl zone in the UNESCO World Heritage List. He told about this in an interview with "Reuters"

"We believe that the inclusion of Chernobyl in the UNESCO heritage list is the first and important step towards making this wonderful place a unique destination that interests all of humanity. The importance of the Chernobyl zone lies far beyond the borders of Ukraine. It is not only about memory, but also about history and people's rights," he said.

Before submitting an application to the UN, places seeking UNESCO protection must be included in the national list of cultural and historical heritage, noted Tkachenko.

He reminded that the Ministry of Culture recently decided to include in the list of such objects a huge radar station built near the city of Chernobyl in the 1970s.

The question of extending this intention to the entire 30-kilometer exclusion zone of Chernobyl as a Soviet-era reserve is also being discussed.
