The Minister of Culture and Information Policy, Alexander Tkachenko, announced the launch of the Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation. The start of his work is scheduled for March of this year.
The official reported this today, February 19, in his Telegram channel. He noted that
he announced the launch of the new body on the air of the TV program "The Right to Power" on channel 1+1.
"The topic of the broadcast, in particular, was the so-called "Fifth Column", namely mass media that work in Ukraine, but against Ukraine, using Russian narratives. The work of such people who call themselves "journalists", "bloggers", "leaders of public opinion" actually has nothing to do with journalism. This is just a tool for throwing in fakes and disinformation, disguised as mass media," the official writes.
In light of this, Tkachenko said that the Ministry of Culture will launch the Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation in March. The new structure should "effectively deal with manipulations and fakes spread by the aggressor country." The recruitment of employees in the CPD is already underway.
The Minister also stated that the main areas of work of the CPD will be detection, response, countermeasures, education and communication projects.
"(The center) will track fakes, distorted information, hostile propaganda and inform Ukrainians about it. Another important component is improving the media literacy of Ukrainian citizens. So that people can learn to check the information themselves, filter it, distinguish fake news from real news," the official added.
Tkachenko also expressed hope for productive cooperation in the fight against fakes with other executive authorities: the National Security Council, the Office of the Vice-Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Digital Affairs.
