Ukraine has "very good chances" for a successful counteroffensive in the spring, — Pentagon chief

The Ukrainians inflicted significant losses on the Russians in equipment and personnel

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin believes that due to the significant depletion of Russian forces and Western weapons, Ukraine has a "very good chance" of launching a successful counteroffensive in the spring of 2023.

He said this during a hearing in the US Senate Committee on Armed Forces on Tuesday.

Ukraine can take advantage of the significant attrition of the Russian army and the supply of Western weapons in order to launch a successful counteroffensive this spring.

"The Ukrainians inflicted significant losses on the Russians, and the Russians depleted their reserves of armored vehicles in a way that no one could have ever imagined. And now we see how Russia is deconserving T-54 and T-55 tanks because of the level of losses caused by the Ukrainians," the head of the Pentagon emphasized.

The US Secretary of Defense noted that currently Ukraine already "has a significant advantage" over the Russian army, although the front line is constantly changing in different directions, and the battles for Bakhmut are going on at a very intense pace.

In addition, the head of the Pentagon said that Russian resources to wage a grueling war are quickly being exhausted. The troops of the Russian Federation are increasingly facing a shortage of artillery and other ammunition, so they are asking for them from Iran and North Korea.

“So I think we'll see an uptick in fighting in the spring as the conditions for maneuver improve, and based on what we've already done and continue to do. I think Ukraine will have a very good chance of success," added Austin.
