Head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov in an interview with the publication The Telegraph spoke about the role and development of the special services during the full-scale invasion of Russia. Main theses:
▫️ Since the beginning of the war, we have significantly increased our staff. The maximum increase was subject to combat, operational-combat units and technical intelligence. The direction of cyber intelligence has been significantly strengthened.
▫️ In connection with the growth of the volume of obtained information, the Ukrainian special service strengthened the analytical direction and introduced new services for technical data processing based on artificial intelligence.
▫️ Ukraine also widely uses the capabilities provided by the intelligence agencies of partner countries. For example, information about missile launches from borders that we cannot cover with our radio-electronic and radio-technical intelligence is often critically important for us. This help is invaluable to us.
▫️ We help partisan groups operating on the territory of the Russian Federation, support them, interact with them, sometimes express our requests or set certain tasks. But this is not as widespread a phenomenon as it sometimes seems.
▫️ The agency plays a serious role in the process of confrontation with terrorist Russia: during the war, it is tasked not only with obtaining information, but also with carrying out special active measures.
▫️ Thanks to agency intelligence, Ukraine was able to receive data about the Russian attack on February 24, 2022 in advance.
▫️ If we relied solely on the data of radio-electronic, radio-technical or cyber-intelligence, then we would not be ready, we would not understand that an invasion would take place, and we would not have time to prepare.
