In Italy, the dormant volcano Etna woke up on the island of Sicily. Because of this, the largest airport in the south of the country has suspended operations.
This is reported by Italian on Twitter agency ANSA.
The active eruption began from the southeast crater, with the release of a gigantic cloud of ash that spread to the south, and a powerful lava flow.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology recorded the increased activity of the volcano on Tuesday, February 16, and soon the eruption began.
The ash cloud was so thick that the villages closest to the volcano were covered with several centimeters of ash and pieces of lava.
The team of the Catania airport, the largest airport in the south of the country, decided to suspend its work due to the activity of the volcano.
The column of smoke and ash above the crater reaches a height of more than 1 km, which, together with poor visibility, creates risks for flight safety.
