Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia resigned, citing disagreements with his team on the subject of opposition leader Nikoi Meli.
"I have decided to leave my position. Of course, I believe and want to believe that this step will contribute to reducing polarization in our country," Gakharia said.
According to the prime minister, the reason for this decision was disagreements with the ruling party regarding the trial of the head of the main opposition party "United National Movement" Niko Melia.
Early in the day, a court in Tbilisi ordered the arrest of deputy Nika Melia. This court decision is related to the case of the request to storm the Georgian parliament in June 2019. Today it became known that the supporters of the "United National Movement" party, founded by the former president of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili, did not allow law enforcement officers who came to hand over the court's arrest warrant to Nika Melia's office. The Ministry of Internal Affairs demands not to interfere.
