Against the backdrop of mass protests in Kazakhstan, President Tokaev accepted the government's resignation. Alikhan Smailov, the first deputy head of the Cabinet of Ministers, has been appointed as acting prime minister.
Tokaev instructed the antimonopoly department to introduce a temporary price regulation of prices for liquefied gas for a period of 180 calendar days. In the regions, the marginal prices for the population should not exceed the level of prices at the end of the previous year.
At the same time, the President of Kazakhstan signed decrees on the introduction of a state of emergency and a curfew in the Mangystau region and Almaty (where protests resulted in mass clashes with the authorities, and protesters burned police cars) from January 5 to January 19.
There are also restrictions on freedom of movement, including vehicles, in Almaty. People on the streets are checked for documents and personally searched. Entry of vehicles into the city is restricted.
The organization and holding of peaceful meetings, spectacles, sports and other mass events are prohibited.
The sale of alcohol is also prohibited.
