The new president of Moldova proposed to withdraw Russian soldiers from Transnistria

Sandu believes that they should be replaced by civilian observers under the auspices of the OSCE

The President-elect of Moldova, Maia Sandu, said that the Russian military must be withdrawn from the unrecognized Transnistria. According to her, the peacekeepers of the Russian Federation should be replaced by a mission of civilian observers under the auspices of the OSCE.

There is an operational group of Russia in Transnistria, there were never any agreements regarding this group on the part of Moldova, so the state's position is that these troops must be withdrawn, and weapons must be removed from the territory of Moldova," said Maya Sandu. She also stated that she intends to continue discussing this issue with the leadership of the Russian Federation. In addition, according to the opinion of the elected president of the country, the peacekeeping mission in the region should be transformed into a civilian one.

"Since there is no danger of armed clashes for a long time, the position of the Moldovan side is that this peacekeeping operation should be transformed into a civilian mission under the auspices of the OSCE," Sandu said.

In turn, the Kremlin said that the idea of replacing Russian peacekeepers in Transnistria with OSCE observers was not previously discussed with Moscow.
