On the night of February 22, an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council regarding the situation in eastern Ukraine was held in New York.
"Russian actions will lead to terrible consequences in Ukraine, Europe and the world," US Permanent Representative Linda Thomas-Greenfield said at the meeting.
Earlier, Ukraine, France and the European Union proposed to hold an emergency meeting of the Council. The topic of discussion was the recognition of the independence of the DPR and the LPR by Russian President Putin on the evening of September 21.
Main theses of the UN Security Council:
- Ukraine wants peace, and Kyiv calls on the Kremlin to cancel the decision to recognize "L/DPR"
- Now it is important to understand who is a friend of the UN, and who will continue to restrain Russia with words
- Putin tore the Minsk agreements to shreds and the USA does not believe that he will stop there
- the ambassador of Ireland noted that Ukraine saved face and did not respond to Russian provocations
- the British ambassador called on the Russian Federation to move away from the dangerous edge.
Meanwhile, the representative of the Russian Federation said:
- accused his colleagues in the UN Security Council of being ready to "bury the Minsk agreements"
- "Kyiv under Zelensky returned to belligerent rhetoric and did everything to destroy the Minsk agreements""
- accused Ukraine of shelling "L/DPR"
- "Donbass is on the threshold of a new Ukrainian military adventure, Moscow cannot allow this, therefore a decision was made on "L/DPR"
- "The Russian Federation is open to diplomacy on Ukraine, but will not allow a new massacre in the Donbass"
