In June, NATO defense ministers will discuss the possible transfer of Western fighter jets to Ukraine at a meeting before the Alliance summit. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in an interview with a German newspaper Spiegel.
The Secretary General, from the Cabinet, commented on the question of the possible transfer of Western fighter jets to Ukraine. According to him, the supply of weapons developed in parallel with the progress of the war.
"At first, light anti-tank weapons were important. Then howitzers and anti-aircraft guns appeared, and then tanks," the NATO leader said.
He also reminded that Poland and Slovakia have already delivered combat aircraft to Ukraine, "albeit old Soviet-type MiG-29s."
"We constantly discuss the issue of whether modern Western fighter jets are needed - both in NATO and with Ukraine. I expect that this topic will also be discussed at the meeting of defense ministers of NATO countries in June," the Secretary General assured.
According to Stoltenberg, ensuring their functioning is no less important than supplying weapons platforms.
"It involves a huge amount of ammunition and spare parts, as well as XNUMX/XNUMX maintenance," he explained.
It should be noted that the Prime Minister of Great Britain Rishi Sunak and the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte announced that they are working on the creation of an international coalition of fighter jets for Ukraine.
In addition, Ukraine hopes to receive from Western partners about 40-50 F-16 fighters and form three to four squadrons to protect the skies.
