Deputy Head of the Office of the President Ihor Zhovkva believes that Ukraine can join NATO without a MAP, following Finland and Sweden.
"Two countries — Sweden and Finland — are moving into NATO without a Membership Action Plan. Ukraine is closely monitoring this process and we see that when it comes to what is not possible without the MAP, it turned out that it is possible. Ukraine took these realities into account when submitting an application on Friday, and we can also take such a shortened path," Ihor Zhovkva said on the air of the telethon.
Zhovkva also noted that the statement of the presidents of 9 European countries should be interpreted as support for Ukraine's membership in NATO.
According to him, in this statement they referred to the Alliance summit in Bucharest in 2008, and not to the application for joining NATO, which Ukraine submitted a few days ago.
"There is a decision of the Bucharest summit, which has not disappeared, where it is written that Ukraine will become a member of NATO. There is no word "once". It says: Ukraine will become a member of NATO, the first stage or one of the stages should be to provide it with the Membership Action Plan.
The Deputy Head of the President's Office emphasized that the statement of the Bucharest Summit was confirmed at the Madrid Summit (2022), when the new Strategic Concept of NATO for the next 10 years duplicated the relevant provision that Ukraine would become a member of NATO.
As a reminder, on Friday, September 30, Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced about Ukraine's signing of the application for accelerated accession to the North Atlantic Alliance and called on Western partners to implement the proposals for security guarantees prepared by Ukraine, outlined in the Kyiv Security Treaty.
