The US Congress backstage proposed to US President Joe Biden to sell or transfer new anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense systems to Ukraine. This was reported by an authoritative American magazine Politico.
Congressmen included an amendment in the 2022 US defense policy bill requiring the Pentagon to submit a report to Congress outlining options for the potential sale or transfer of "existing systems" to Ukraine. including the potential shipment of the Iron Dome battery."
This amendment was introduced by Congressman Scott Franklin (Florida) and passed on a bipartisan vote.
The publication notes that the Congress listened to the requests of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Andriy Taran.
At the same time, there are questions about the effectiveness of the Iron Dome system in Ukraine.
According to Michael Cofman, director of the Russian Studies Program at the CNA Center, "Iron Dome will not be effective at close range or on the demarcation line, because this system will be shot down very quickly by Russian missile systems of volley fire."
However, Kofman said that the system "can intercept long-range missiles, which will allow the battery to protect a critical object or command center" in eastern Ukraine.
It is noted that since its deployment in Israel in 2011, the system created by the Israeli defense company Rafael in partnership with the American company Raytheon has established itself as one of the world's most effective means of destroying short-range missiles.
The Israeli military said that Iron Dome shot down about 90% of the rockets fired at Israel over the past few years.
