Ukraine is among the leaders in reducing the population: UN data

By 2050, the population of Ukraine may decrease to 35 million people.

Ukraine was recognized by the United Nations (UN) as the country with the fastest rate of depopulation in the world. The data were presented to the UN on November 27 in the analytical report "Demographic Processes".

On According to According to the UN, the reason for this is a high mortality rate, a low birth rate and a constant increase in external migration. According to experts, about a third of Ukrainians die before the age of 65, while more than half of these deaths could have been prevented.

The organization also noted that the population of Ukraine is one of the fastest aging in Europe, almost a fifth of the population is over 60 years old. This is the reason for the increase in healthcare and pension costs, which burdens the state budget.

Analysts concluded that by 2050, the population of Ukraine will decrease to 35 million people. In order to solve the demographic problem, the authorities of Ukraine were recommended to "invest in human capital", adopted political measures aimed at health care, education, poverty reduction, decent wages, social protection and environmental protection.

According to the last official census of Ukraine, which took place in 2001, the population of the country was 48 people.
