The Verkhovna Rada supported the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDO) to introduce sanctions against Nicaragua.
322 parliamentarians voted "for".
Secretary of the National Security Council Aleksey Danilov, during his speech from the rostrum of the Council, reminded that on November 10, 2020, the Republic of Nicaragua carried out unfriendly actions towards Ukraine, opening an "honorary consulate" in the annexed Crimea.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine repeatedly appealed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua with the demand to cancel its illegal decision, however, the official Nicaragua ignored this appeal from the Ukrainian side, deliberately disregarding the official warning of Ukraine. By decree of the President of the Republic of Nicaragua, Oleg Belaventsev was appointed "honorary consul" in Crimea, who on March 18, 2019 was found guilty by the Sviatoshinsky district court of the city of Kyiv of encroaching on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine, inciting the State Council, waging an aggressive war against Ukraine, and who a sentence of 13 years of imprisonment was imposed," Danilov said.
He added that such actions are gross violations of the legislation of Ukraine and international law.
According to the law "On Sanctions", the decision to apply, cancel and amend sanctions against a foreign state is adopted by the National Security Council, put into effect by presidential decree and approved within 48 hours from the date of signing the draft resolution by the Council. The corresponding decision enters into force from the moment of adoption of the resolution and is binding.
Note that Nicaragua is a country in Central America, washed by the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It borders Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south.
