The special tribunal on the crime of Russian aggression will most likely be established by the end of 2024. European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders said this, reports Deutsche Welle.
According to him, two main options regarding the tribunal are currently being considered: an international tribunal based on a multilateral agreement or a simplified decision based on a bilateral agreement between Ukraine and the Council of Europe.
"In addition, a new system of judicial transfer was created in the EU. Yes, if a criminal trial is ongoing in Ukraine, in particular regarding the crime of aggression, then it can be transferred to such a special tribunal." - said Reinders.
He believes that the creation of the tribunal is at the final stage.
"The next step is a matter of political will. Now is only the beginning of the year, and by the end of the year it should become possible." - he concluded.
It will be recalled that 44 countries supported the idea of creating a special tribunal regarding the crime of Russian aggression and using its frozen assets for the benefit of Ukraine. On April 2, they signed the corresponding political declaration at the "Restoring Justice for Ukraine" conference held in The Hague.
