Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan calls on the leaders of the G20 countries to meet some of Russia's demands for the renewal of the grain agreement, reports Bloomberg.
Erdogan, who helped broker the initial Black Sea Grains Initiative in 2022, is making the effort in closed-door meetings with leaders at the G20 summit in New Delhi.
Earlier, Erdoğan failed to convince Russian president-dictator Vladimir Putin to restore the "grain agreement".
"While Turkey's efforts are unlikely to affect Ukraine's allies in the US and Europe, Erdogan's acceptance of Russia's demands underscores the challenges he faces in his balancing act following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine," the authors write.
According to Ankara, the only way to restore the "grain deal" is to ease some Western sanctions against Russia, which Moscow believes prevent it from selling agricultural equipment (tractors or spare parts).
Ankara is asking world leaders to make it easier to insure Russian food and fertilizer exports, and to restore Moscow's connection to the SWIFT system for international payments.
"Turkey is telling its counterparts that the way to revive the deal is to loosen some of the sanctions that Moscow says prevent imports of agricultural equipment like tractors or parts, Turkish officials said," Bloomberg reported.
