Even total vaccination of the planet's population with an effective drug will not guarantee the eradication of Covid-19 on Earth. The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is likely to become a seasonal respiratory infection.
This was reported by the representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Russia, Melita Vuynovich.
"Even the presence of a highly effective vaccine does not guarantee that we will be able to completely destroy or eradicate the virus. A probable scenario in the context of an effective global vaccination program is that in the future the virus will become an endemic virus with a low threat level," said Melita Vuynovich.
She also said that "the human population has not encountered SARS-CoV-2 before and therefore turned out to be completely defenseless in the face of a new threat."
"Comparisons of the coronavirus with the "Spanish" today are quite correct, but with atypical pneumonia or the Middle East respiratory syndrome - not quite (H1N1 remained, and the Middle East syndrome practically disappeared).
The virus gradually adapts to the human population and becomes a "habitual" seasonal respiratory infection," the WHO representative noted.
At the same time, Vuynovich reminded that, "according to preliminary studies, most patients are contagious within 8-9 days after the appearance of symptoms, although the infectious period may be longer in patients who are seriously ill."
"The WHO recommendation on a quarantine period of 14 days is based on the available information on the incubation period. The average incubation period is 5-6 days with an upper limit of 14 days," the expert clarified.
