Stepanov: in the coming days, Ukraine will see a surge of covid-infected people

He added that mass gatherings of people were observed during the holidays

In Ukraine, the period of strict quarantine from January 8 to 24 will coincide with the incubation period of those people who became infected during the winter holidays. A spike in Covid-19 infections is expected in the country.

This was stated by the head of the Ministry of Health Maksym Stepanov during the daily briefing.

"The period of introduction of enhanced quarantine restrictions from January 8 to 24, 2021 coincides with the end of the incubation period of the Covid-19 disease in people who were infected during the New Year holidays," the minister said.

In addition, he added that during the holidays, mass gatherings of people, active movement of citizens across Ukraine, and abroad were observed, and many could get infected in such conditions. Thus, the incubation period of 14 days will fall exactly on the period of the January quarantine.

Stepanov also reminded that the increase in the number of patients will lead to an additional burden on the medical system of Ukraine and said that at the moment a third of patients hospitalized with Covid-19 are in serious condition.
