The COVID-19 pandemic is over, says the WHO head

Covid

According to official data, almost 7 million people have died from COVID-1

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

About this reports informed WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. He also announced the termination of the work of the WHO emergency committee.

According to him, representatives of the WHO approached him with a proposal to cancel the status of an emergency in the field of health care.

"I have heeded this advice and am announcing the end of the global public health emergency related to COVID-19. But this does not mean that the coronavirus no longer poses a threat to health," said Gebreisus.

According to him, the pandemic has been on a downward trend for more than a year.

"Population immunity increases due to vaccination and infection, mortality decreases and the pressure on health care systems is reduced. This trend has allowed most countries to return to the life we knew before COVID-19," said the WHO head.

At the same time, Ghebreyesus noted that this does not mean that the coronavirus no longer poses a global threat to health.

"This virus remains. It still kills and it still changes. There remains the risk of new strains emerging that cause new outbreaks of disease and death. Last week, COVID-19 claimed a life every three minutes – and those are just the deaths we know about,” he said.

The WHO noted that that March 11, 2023 marks three years since the organization first characterized the global outbreak of COVID-19 as a pandemic.

"It was a significant moment that attracted the attention of the world media. However, from WHO's point of view, a much more important moment came six weeks before, on January 30, 2020, when I declared a public health emergency of international concern," says WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The head of the WHO noted that according to official data, almost 7 million people have died from COVID-19. However, according to the WHO, the real number of deaths is much higher, at least 20 million.
