Oleksiy Danilov: the strategic turning point of the war is coming

Oleksiy Danilov

For the security of Ukraine after the end of the war, the president has developed 10 points of the Peace Formula, which Volodymyr Zelenskyy is promoting among international partners and which are being actively discussed at the diplomatic level. Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, wrote to Ukrainian truth his vision and reasoning regarding the Peace Formula of Ukraine and options for its implementation.

Oleksiy Danilov: I would like to dwell on several important points on which it will depend (Formulas of peace ed.) full performance. In this regard, the clause of the Peace Formula, which provides for the withdrawal of all Russian troops and armed formations from the territory of Ukraine, restoration of full control over all sections of the Ukrainian state border, is of particular importance. A point that is, of course, a key element of the entire Ukrainian initiative, without which the entire structure is ineffective.

In my deep conviction, there is only one effective solution to this problem - the de-occupation of Ukrainian lands by military means. Russia and its ruling clique do not understand any other language than the language of force and weapons. Ago The formula for peace is the formula for weapons. The sooner Ukraine gets enough modern weapons, the sooner we will restore peace, which will be safer for Europe and the world.

The practice of rationing military aid to Ukraine for reasons of fear, so as not to irritate Putin and provoke Russia to further escalation, is fundamentally flawed. Refusing or delaying the transfer of modern weapons to the Ukrainian armed forces is a direct encouragement of the Kremlin to further war, not the other way around.

The more convincing the superiority of Western weapons in the hands of Ukrainians on land, sea, and air will be for Russia, the closer will be the achievement of our strategic goals, which coincide with the goals and values of the democratic world.

For example, the complete or partial liquidation of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, which is a solvable task, should significantly accelerate the process of Russia's search for a way out of the ongoing war. This could be a good demonstration of the lack of capabilities of the Russian army to adequately counter Western technologies, which would paint a very sad picture of further events.

Where urgent surgery is required, drug therapy should not be used.

But there is a problem. What the Ukrainians know, about which our Polish friends, friends from the Baltic countries - Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia - have constantly warned, until now, many politicians on both sides of the globe, on whom the decision to support Ukraine depends, do not want to know and refuse to believe. condemnation of Russia.

And this despite the fact that the 570th day of the full-scale war waged by Russia against Ukraine continues. When it seems that everything should be clear, what an ugly and extremely dangerous entity the world is dealing with. After tens of thousands of victims, destruction, continuous war crimes and crimes against humanity, some have illusions about the possibility of dialogue.

Much of the road is behind us and it is not known how much is still ahead, and right now a strategic turning point is coming.

The sprint, which everyone has been waiting for, is replaced by the steeplechase distance, and here there are already different rules and requirements for the athlete's physical condition and his training.

During the war, many things happened for which Ukraine and the whole world were not ready, but firmness and stability were shown, which is exactly what is needed now in the circumstances of the new reality.

In conditions where the future causes fear with its uncertainty and unpredictability, one can get tired and succumb to the temptation of skepticism or compromise - this is exactly what Putin's calculation is based on. Therefore, it is no coincidence that, realizing the criticality of the moment, there are signs of a certain media preparation of public opinion in this direction.

Publications appear in authoritative and influential publications that advance several major themes:

  • optimism about the success of Ukraine began to weaken;
  • the Ukrainian counteroffensive has failed, the country's military capability is fading every day;
  • The Armed Forces of Ukraine will not have the ability to liberate the territories;
  • Ukraine's ability to withstand the war is calculated in weeks and months;
  • Russia's resources are limitless and needed by the world economy;
  • it is better to end the conflict quickly, even if it allows Russia to keep the captured territories.

The Kremlin, in turn, sends false signals about its own "peacefulness" and readiness to end the war, which also slows down the West's decision to provide Ukraine with new types of weapons and military equipment or to increase supplies of the existing range.

All of this carries the threat that "Foreign Affairs" writes about - "the slow unraveling of the carefully woven web of foreign aid."

Therefore, the implementation of the Peace Formula should be more successful and, if possible, speedy. In order to prevent the "untangling of the aid network", our partners, in my opinion, should:

  • First, to form an agreed formula of one's own vision of Ukrainian victory, which creates political responsibility.
  • Secondly, in view of the electoral political cycles and possible changes in the situation in Europe and the USA from the point of view of preserving the stability of the partnership, a step to consolidate military aid to Ukraine in long-term cycles and legislation is considered far-sighted.
  • Thirdly, to develop and implement a set of measures to reduce the so-called "war fatigue".
  • Fourth, to carry out a re-planning of joint activities within the framework of all points of the Peace Formula from the point of view of the factor of time and sequence, bearing in mind their possible long-term nature.

However, I want to emphasize once again: Putin and his war are a cancerous tumor. If it is not removed completely and permanently, it is only a matter of time when a relapse will begin in an even worse form with the spread of metastases throughout the body.

Does anyone think that cancer can be negotiated?

And more. Any cessation of the war without the defeat of Russia will be regarded by the authoritarian regimes as Putin's victory, and this will signal the beginning of conflicts and wars over territories of various types and status - first regional, and then global scale.
