The European Commission on behalf of the European Union paid Ukraine 600 million euros as part of the program of macro-financial assistance related to the coronavirus pandemic. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the European Union, the head and executive deputy head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and Valdys Dombrovskis for their help.

 "Ukraine still occupies an important place in the European agenda. This is our neighboring country, and it belongs to Europe. We are committed to offering political, financial and technical support, especially at this time of crisis, as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and overcoming its social and economic consequences," said Vice President of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis. In addition, he noted that this — the first payment of emergency macro-financial aid, which will contribute to stability in Ukraine and allow the country to allocate resources to mitigate the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.

The first tranche was made without fulfilling any specific conditions on the part of Ukraine. And the issuance of the second payment will depend on the eight specific measures that were previously outlined in the Memorandum. Among them is the fight against corruption and improvement of the business environment.

In turn, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, thanked the European Union, as well as EU officials, for providing this assistance to Ukraine.

"I am grateful to our European partners and personally to Ursula von der Leyen and Valdys Dombrovskis for allocating 600 million euros of macro-financial assistance to Ukraine. This is a strong signal of support for macroeconomic stability and the reform program," Zelensky wrote in his message on Twitter.
