The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, submitted a bill to the Verkhovna Rada that officially declares May 8 the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939–1945, and May 9 will be the Day of Europe. The parliament has already announced that they are ready to adopt the document in an accelerated mode. On site parliament, the text of the document has already appeared.
So, in this bill, the president proposes to cancel Victory Day, which was previously celebrated every year on May 9. Instead, it is proposed that there be a new holiday in Ukraine - the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945, which will be celebrated on May 8 and will be a day off. Western countries celebrate the victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War on May 8: Germany's unconditional surrender took effect at 23.01:8 p.m. on May 1945, 9, officially May XNUMX in Moscow.
At the same time, it should be noted that there are no additional days off in Ukraine during martial law. Ukrainians will be able to rest on the new dates only after the end of hostilities.
May 9 will be Europe Day and will be a working day.
"We are returning to our state an honest history without ideological influences. It is on May 8 that most peoples of the world remember the greatness of the victory over the fascists. Today I signed the corresponding decree, and every year from tomorrow, May 9, we will celebrate our historic unity - the unity of all Europeans who destroyed Nazism and will defeat racism." said the Ukrainian president.
