In Turkey, more than 300 people received a life sentence: they tried to carry out a coup d'état

The Turkish court sentenced 337 people to life imprisonment

The Turkish court sentenced 337 people to life imprisonment, finding them guilty of attempting to overthrow the country's president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, four years ago.

It is reported by the Air Force.

It is reported that a total of almost 500 people, including 25 generals and 10 civilians, appeared before the court on charges of attempted seizure of power and an attempt on the life of President Erdogan. 475 of the defendants were in one way or another connected with the Akinci Air Base near Ankara, where key events took place during the days of the failed coup.

"337 people received life sentences, 14 of them (10 military pilots and four civilians) are under intensive detention," the journalists reported.

It is noted that the process has been going on since the end of July 2017 on the territory of the "Sinjan" prison complex in the suburbs of Ankara. A hall with a capacity of one and a half thousand people was specially built for him. On the day of the sentencing, the room was overcrowded.

Six people were tried in absentia, including 79-year-old Islamic theologian Fethullah Gülen, who lives in the American state of Pennsylvania, and theology teacher Adil Oksuz.

Let us remind you that an unsuccessful attempt at an armed coup took place in Turkey on the night of July 16, 2016 — more than 250 people died, and about 2200 were injured. A state of emergency was introduced in the country. The first trials in the coup attempt case began at the end of December 2017, and the first verdicts were handed down in January of the same year.

According to the human rights website Turkey Purge, more than 96 thousand people were arrested after the coup attempt, and more than 500 thousand were under investigation.

Ankara considers the organizer of the coup attempt to be the radical Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, who has lived in the United States since 1999. The Turkish authorities unsuccessfully tried to obtain his extradition from Washington.
