Facebook and Instagram may stop working in Ukraine

Meta was unable to conclude new agreements with the EU on data exchange.

Mark Zuckerberg's company Meta may shut down social networks Facebook and Instagram in Europe due to a dispute over where users' personal data is stored.

Meta explains that the ability to transfer user data between countries is crucial for them. However, there are European laws aimed at protecting the privacy of users, in order to save user data within the jurisdiction of the EU, the previous systems were abolished. Since Meta was unable to conclude new data sharing agreements, Facebook and Instagram may stop working in Europe.

"If we are unable to transfer data between the countries and regions in which we operate or if we are prohibited from sharing data between our products and services, this may affect our ability to provide our services," the company said in a statement.

Meta says that the company will still be able to sign new agreements in 2022, but if it fails, "we may not be able to offer a number of our largest products and services in Europe, in particular, Facebook and Instagram."

We note that the termination of these social networks may seriously threaten the development of business in Europe, because most companies use advertising on Facebook and Instagram for promotion.
