The Telegram messenger became the second most downloaded application in the US, after Twitter permanently blocked the account of the current president Donald Trump, and Apple and Google removed the social network Parler, popular among his supporters, from the application stores.
This was reported by The Daily Telegraph newspaper.
According to the publication, during the week from January 6, Telegram was downloaded in the USA by about 545 thousand. times, which is almost three times more than a week earlier. In addition to the blocking of accounts related to Trump, the growth of Telegram's popularity could also be influenced by changes in the privacy policy of the second popular messenger, WhatsApp. On January 8, the administration of the latter announced that the personal data of users of the WhatsApp application is available to all Facebook application families.
The publication contacted Telegram founder Pavel Durov for a comment, but he did not respond to the request at the time of publication.
After changing WhatsApp's privacy policy, Durov announced the accelerated "flight" of users to Telegram. According to him, at the same time, paid bots appeared, which began to publish fakes about Telegram and "prejudiced information" about WhatsApp.
