The famous film director, screenwriter and producer Gennady Tarasul died on February 8, 2022 in Odessa at the age of 88. This was reported in the National Union of Cinematographers of Ukraine.
For cinematographers, he became a man-legend long before the appearance of the highest named award of the same name - "Legend of the Odessa Film Studio", which was awarded to those who devoted their lives to the creation and strengthening of the fame of "Black Sea Hollywood".
"After graduating from the Odessa Polytechnic Institute, Tarasul "fell in love with cinema" - definitively and irreversibly. And his debut as a second director was work with Kira Muratova on "Short Encounters". And then, with Muratova, there were also "Long Wires". And also - with different directors-producers, different films. And also - he wrote scripts, and good films were created based on them: well, there is only one "Long Memory" directed by Roman Vyktyuk - and it already speaks what it is called, for itself," the message reads.
At the "Golden Duke" film festival, Tarasul invented, created and headed the festival audience center with the same name: "Golden Duke".
In addition, Tarasul wrote and published books, some of which became the basis for staging theatrical performances. He also wrote screenplays for the films "Otvetnaya mera" (1974), "Genes - a star far and near" (1979), "Long Memory" (1985).
"Already at a more than respectable age, forgetting about his own health, Tarasul was a member of the jury of the Kira Muratova Short Encounters film competition - and meticulously, with his eternal fury, analyzed the luck and miscalculations of young debutants," the National Union of Cinematographers said.
