The counter-intelligence of the Security Service detained an agent of the Russian military intelligence who, under the guise of a taxi driver, was spying on civilian and military objects in the Kherson region, reports department.
First of all, the attacker tracked the locations of the largest concentration of personnel and combat equipment of the Armed Forces, as well as the location of fortifications.
To gather intelligence, the Russian agent posed as a taxi driver and drove around the city in his own car, in which he installed a hidden video recorder.
In addition, he tried to get "necessary" information by having confidential conversations with his passengers. Moreover, even Ukrainian military personnel used his services from time to time.
The person involved sent the received information via messenger to the occupiers to prepare targeted strikes on the city, using artillery and kamikaze drones.
However, the SBU employees exposed the aggressor's plans in advance and thwarted their implementation. At the same time, comprehensive measures were taken to secure the Ukrainian military and officials of the front-line OVA.
This became possible thanks to the exposure of the Russian agent at the initial stage of his intelligence activity.
After that, his every move was documented step by step and he was detained while he was carrying out an enemy mission.
In particular, during the investigation, the SBU learned about the suspect's involvement in the attempted assassination of the head of the local OVA.
It was established that the occupiers tried to target the official's car with a Russian FPV drone based on the coordinates and "hints" of the agent.
The drone was equipped with a shot at an RPG-7 hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher that was supposed to detonate the vehicle in which the official was.
However, thanks to the SBU and Ukrainian defenders, the drone was neutralized.
According to the investigation, the detainee is a 55-year-old local resident who remotely worked for the Russian special service through an acquaintance.
He turned out to be a former local resident who, after a full-scale invasion, fled to Russia and began working for the enemy's military intelligence. His identity has already been established by the Security Service.
On the basis of the collected evidence, the investigators of the Security Service informed the detainee of the suspicion under Part 2 of Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed under martial law).
He is currently in custody. The perpetrator faces life imprisonment. Comprehensive measures are underway to prosecute his accomplice, who is hiding in Russia.
The special operation was carried out by SBU employees in the Kherson region under the procedural guidance of the regional prosecutor's office.
