Prosecutors announced that two citizens of Ukraine were suspected of cruel treatment of prisoners of war and violation of the laws and customs of war (Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). This was reported in the Office of the Prosecutor General.
The pre-trial investigation established that from April to December 2014, as a guard in one of the "prisons" of the occupation administration of the Russian Federation in the Donetsk region, located in the occupied premises of the SBU headquarters, he mistreated the servicemen of one of the territorial defense battalions. In order to demoralize the Ukrainian soldiers, he regularly questioned them, inflicting numerous blows with his hands and a rubber baton on various parts of the body.
According to the investigation, from April 2014 to February 2016, the second suspect, being a guard of the same "prison", humiliated servicemen of the territorial defense battalion, verbally insulting, intimidating and threatening their lives.
"Such criminal actions are a serious violation of Article 130 of the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War of 1949, Article 11 of the Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions," the Prosecutor General's Office noted.
In total, more than 250 cases of torture of servicemen and civilians in this "prison of the DPR" have been established. The materials of the criminal proceedings refer to 170 illegal places of deprivation of liberty in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, where members of the Russian Armed Forces kept more than 3500 people.
