The president of Brazil decided to create a "peace club" with the participation of China

Experts are skeptical about Brazil's neutrality

In Brazil, there was talk of creating a group of countries to mediate in peace negotiations between Ukraine and the aggressor country Russia.

He writes about it Financial Times, citing Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva wants to propose the creation of a "peace club" with the participation of China to mediate in ending the war in Ukraine. He will present this proposal in Beijing, where he will meet with Xi Jinping.

"We are very interested in promoting or helping to hold any meeting that would lead to a peace process," Lula was quoted as saying by the publication.

As the newspaper notes, the Brazilian leader seeks to restore Brazil's diplomatic influence after the relative isolation of the previous government of Jair Bolsonaro, but resists joining Western countries that send weapons to Ukraine.

"We are very interested in promoting or assisting in any meeting that would lead to a peace process. The president has said so many times that he hears a lot about war, but very few words about peace. He is interested in peace negotiations," Vieira said in an interview with the Financial Times.

Earlier this year, Lula said he would promote the idea of a group of mediator countries, saying it was "time for China to get its hands dirty."
"My proposal is that we create a group of countries that will try to sit down at the negotiating table with Ukraine and Russia to try to find peace," he added.

Some analysts are skeptical of this initiative.

Ryan Berg, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, believes that "Brazil is not in a position to influence the outcome of this war and is not seen by many as a neutral arbiter because of its BRICS membership." (a group that includes Russia, China, India and South Africa).

Vieira, meanwhile, said Lula's trip to China, Brazil's biggest trading partner, would signal his country's return to a more active foreign policy. Lula will leave for China on Sunday. He will meet Xi in Beijing early next week.

Lula is among Latin American leaders and heads of developing countries who seek to remain neutral on the war and express concern about Western efforts to arm Ukraine.
