SBU detained the first Ukrainian sea pirate in history

A resident of Mykolaiv demanded half a million dollars in ransom.

The SBU detained a sea pirate who seized ships twice, the press center of the SBU reported.

It is noted that the first sea pirate in the history of Ukraine was a resident of Mykolaiv. The man got a job in an international company that protects commercial vessels from pirates. However, instead of guarding the ship, the man seized it himself and demanded $500. Negotiations with the managers of the shipowner's company lasted four days, after which they managed to persuade the pirate to hand over his weapons and unlock the ship for $6.

However, when the attacker returned to the floating base of the security company, he seized its arsenal and started new negotiations. This time the pirate demanded $100, otherwise he threatened to throw all the weapons overboard.

The company refused to pay the ransom. After the man threw part of the weapon into the water, he was stopped by force.

The SBU noted that since the events took place in the open sea, it was impossible to bring him to justice (no state has jurisdiction over neutral waters).

"The pirate was already detained in Ukraine. During a special operation by SBU officers, the perpetrator was exposed in Nikolaev. Since coming to the family, he has changed his passport and place of residence several times. Now he has been charged with suspicion under Part 1 of Art. 446 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, that is, in piracy, namely "the use of violence, robbery or other hostile actions against the crew of a sea vessel," the special service noted.

The issue of selecting a male restraining order is being resolved.
