The Odessa Opera Theater was considered insufficiently Ukrainianized

The Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language wants to take measures.

As of September 1, 2021, only 3 performances were held in the state language at the Odessa National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet. Because of this, the language ombudsman Taras Kremen accused the institution of insufficient Ukrainianization.

He announced this on his Facebook page.

The Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language stated that 102 performances were held in foreign languages at the Odessa Opera House. And only 45 of them were translated into Ukrainian with the help of subtitles.

The situation is similar in Kharkiv, where in the Kharkiv National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet named after N. Lysenko, out of 132 performances, only 4 operas were performed in the state language.

According to the language ombudsman, these situations in Odesa and Kharkiv were recorded as a result of on-site monitoring conducted recently by the Commissioner's Secretariat.

"Regarding theaters that will continue to violate the norms of the language law, which is evidenced by the next appeals to our address, measures of state control over the use of the state language will be initiated," explained Taras Kremen.

It should be noted that most of the performances in the Ukrainian language were held by the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater (Kyiv). There, all 309 performances were performed in the state language. The National Academic Ukrainian Drama Theater named after Maria Zankovetska (Lviv) is also in the lead, where all 306 performances were also performed in Ukrainian.
